TESS
My fingers shake as I dig through my purse. Callumâs making me nervous. Iâm usually so comfortable in his presence, but not tonight. I donât understand the way he keeps looking at me. Itâs the way Iâve always wanted him to look at me, and my body lights up like a wildfire each time he stares. This is uncharted territory between us.
âI got you a gift. For your birthday.â I realize the time. âShit. Which I guess is technically yesterday. I guess itâs a belated birthday gift.â
âYou remembered.â His eyes twinkle and his lips curve with a soft smile. âThank you.â
My cheeks heat under his pointed stare. Of course I remembered. I memorize everything about this man. âMaybe wait and see what it is first.â I tease, reaching for humor to break the tension that builds whenever our gazes collide. Maybe Mercury is in retrograde. Heâs not a cheater, though, and neither am I. But I canât deny Iâm conflicted. Because holy hell do I want to kiss him.
âIâm sure it wonât compare to what Celeste got you.â I voice the reminder of his girlfriend for his sake as much as mine.
âGod I hope so.â His lips pinch as if theyâve tasted something sour.
Oh great. Sheâs probably already given him something expensive and flashy. Not that it should matter what she got him. Theyâre dating. Still, I hate that Iâll always feel a little inferior to her. âSome of us have to stay budget friendly.â
Callumâs smile falls, his stare holding mine. âCeleste and I broke up.â
His words are the very ones Iâve wanted to hear for years. Still, they come as a shock. They broke up? My mouth falls open. âOn your birthday?â
âThis calls for another drink.â Popping up from the couch, he retrieves the bottle of Jameson and pours himself another, then tops off my glass. He sits back on the couch and holds his glass to mine, clinking our glasses before taking a drink. I take a sip; the sharpness of the liquor should serve to distract me from the news Callum dropped, but it doesnât.
âWhat happened?â Did she break up with you? Are you sad? Do I have a chance this time, or will you move on and fall for someone else?
âShe broke up with me, but I donât think she even remembered it was my birthday.â He laughs, though it lacks his usual humor. âShe was too busy listing all the ways Iâve disappointed her.â
I wince. âOuchâ
âYeah.â
âIâm sorry.â Itâs bad that I want to celebrate. She never appreciated him. Not the way she should have. Though, I donât wish him any pain. âAre you okay?â
âSurprisingly? Yeah.â He scrubs a hand over his jaw and smirks. âI mean it probably has a little to do with the Guinness and Jameson, oh and the fact that the owners of freaking Detour Records stopped in to see my show.â He bugs his eyes and flashes one of his devious grins.
I bite my lower lip in an impossible attempt to rein in my smile.
